When bass fishing’s popularity exploded in the early 1970s, choosing a rod was much easier than it is today. Fewer companies made rods then, and all bass rods were fiberglass and sported pistol-grip hand les. The toughest decision was whether to buy a 51⁄2- or 6-footer, the two basic lengths. Then you could opt for a medium, medium-heavy or heavy action to match the baits you intended to fish with the rod.
Then along came graphite, longer rods, trigger-stick handles and a host of new bass-fishing tactics that included spinning applications. These days many companies make superb bass rods in a myriad of actions. All Star’s Team All Star rods, for example, come in 33 models, many of which are designed for specific fishing methods such as flipping, pitching, cranking, Carolina-rigging, drop-shot fishing and more.
Though you have plenty to think about when choosing a rod for a given bass-fishing chore, you should include one more consideration — is your rod killing your lure’s action? This question is especially pertinent when the lure is a jerkbait, crankbait or topwater plug.
