From the North to the South, springtime signals a return to strong crappie fishing. In the upper latitudes, gone are truly frigid days, while below the Mason-Dixon Line, formerly chilly times are ameliorated by an amplified sun. With this warming trend, crappie go on a calorie binge. Both male and female crappie are carrying the seeds of the next generation, and this makes them hefty and hungry. However, spring can be a relative term. Along the wrinkled shores of Lake Champlain, true spring doesn’t occur until after a late ice-out, while a thousand miles away in the Sunshine State, spring and New Year’s Day aren’t that far apart. In these different climates, crappie anglers have a lot to contend with. To catch the biggest fish, they need to work a variety of structures in a variety of ways.
