Sometime back in the 1970s, a group of innovative anglers discovered that it was possible to catch fish just a few feet from the end of their boats. Since then, anglers like Denny Brauer and Rick Clunn perfected the art of close-quarters flipping and pitching, winning hundreds of thousands of dollars in tournaments throughout the country and setting a trend that continues to this day. In fact, flipping and pitching jigs and soft plastics are so popular it seems as if no one actually casts those lures anymore. Plenty of people do, of course, but the technique just doesn't seem to make any headlines. Too bad. Casting a jig or soft plastic on a jighead is an effective go-to presentation in a wide variety of situations on lakes and rivers everywhere. It’s a killer tactic for largemouth and smallmouth bass, and casting a jig can catch fish when other more popular techniques fail.
