The advent of the suspending stick bait made it easier for bass anglers to jerk their lures down in front of bass hanging in the middle of the water column and keep the baits in the strike zone for however long it took to trigger a strike.

Savvy anglers have succeeded for years to coax inactive wintertime bass into biting these lures, but twitching a stick bait with neutral buoyancy is just one way to prolong a lure in the strike zone of suspended bass. Two other devices that bass anglers can use to tempt suspended bass are an old reliable (the plastic or Styrofoam bobber) and a new gadget called the Dive Bob. Both floats give suspended bass a different look, since the devices can be used with a variety of lures including jigs, soft plastics and crankbaits.

Relying on a bobber to catch bass is certainly not a new technique, as man has used some form of a floating strike indicator throughout the recorded history of fishing and probably even before then. Many anglers have also caught plenty of bass in their childhood days with live bait set below a bobber or cork.

With today’s fishing pressure and the need for anglers to concentrate on bass suspended offshore, the bobber offers another alternative to present a wide array of lures in the mid-depth ranges.
