When bass anglers think of tubes, generally they think of them as pitching baits, dragging baits or something they might use as a fall bait around structure. Generally, those thoughts run from spring into summer and merge into fall fisheries. Few bass fishermen give serious thought to wintertime bass fishing, and when they do, tubes don’t enter into the equation at all. Well, maybe that last statement is too strong because there are some anglers who use tubes as one of their primary lures during winter. And even if tubes aren’t the primary choice, they play a good second fiddle, especially when used in the right conditions. Those right conditions can be extreme. When the water is dark or heavily stained, bass will hold on shallow cover all through winter, and tubes can be an effective bait then. On the other hand, when the water is clear and bass suspend, tubes are deadly then, too. These two very different sets of conditions promote the use of the same bait, one that most fishermen consider a summer lure.
