It’s easy to understand why boat docks are bass magnets. Beneath them lies a dark sanctuary from which bass can ambush bluegills, shad and other baitfish. On many lakes, boat docks comprise the primary bass cover. A large dock creates hundreds of square feet of shade, enough to hold an entire school of bass in some cases. Even a narrow dock in the right location can yield one or more lunkers. The downside to docks is that not every one of them has what it takes to consistently hold bass. If you fish boat docks randomly, you’ll wait a long time between strikes. The key is to fish the prime docks and skip the rest.
