There are several different methods to catch bass. There’s also an infinite number of lures on the market to catch them with, but when the fishing gets tough, many professional anglers rely on soft-plastic jerkbaits to put them on the podium.
Jimmy Mason, a professional angler from Alabama, is in this category. Mason competes in bass tournaments across the country. He also guides anglers during the week. One lure that is never far from his fingertips is a soft-plastic jerkbait. Like many anglers, Mason prefers soft-plastic jerkbaits because they can be modified easily. “I like to cut the tail into a V shape,” Mason says of his favorite jerkbait, the Yum Houdini Shad. “It comes with a paddle tail, but I like to fork it with a pair of surgical scissors. Cutting the tail into a V shape gives it a more erratic action. Soft jerkbaits are known for darting from side to side. Cutting the tail makes it dart around even more, which catches the eye of the fish.”
