The first thing
most anglers probably learned about
bass fishing was that bass like to hang
around shallow cover. If the lake you’re fishing
has an abundance of stumps, sunken logs, submerged
weedbeds and/or boulders, you know right where to cast,
and you usually don’t have too much trouble catching bass.
But not all lakes are loaded with cover. In fact, some
bodies of water have so little cover, especially in their shallows,
that they seem positively barren. These venues are
often crystal clear, adding to the feeling of frustration you
get when fishing them.
When gazing through all that transparent water at an unbroken expanse of sand or gravel, it’s easy to assume that precious few bass could even live in such a sterile environment. Yet barren lakes can hold monster largemouth and smallmouth bass. The trick is knowing where, when and how to fish these lakes where cover is scarce.
