The classic smallmouth lake is usually portrayed
as being deep and clear, with water clarity
so pronounced that you can read the date on
a dime 20 feet down. Without a doubt, such lakes
are beautiful to behold and often hold truly impressive
bronzebacks.
But catching these fighters from clear
lakes can be tricky. They often eschew
the shallows in favor of offshore structure
or may spend most of their time
suspending in super-deep water where
they’re all but unreachable with typical
bass lures and presentations.
Granted, most bass anglers don’t associate
smallmouth with murky water, so
it may come as a surprise that some of the
biggest smallies taken annually come from
venues that range from stained to downright
muddy.
