On a sunny afternoon in the 1970s, I encountered three senior anglers coming off the water as I was launching my boat on a natural lake near my home. As a friendly gesture, I asked how they had done. Without saying a word, two of them hoisted an extremely impressive stringer of heavyweight largemouth bass.
Although distressed to see such fine bass specimens headed to a meeting with the fillet knife, I nonetheless asked how the bass were caught. Again, without a word, each held up a fishing rod with a different lure tied on. I readily recognized the lures — a South Bend Bass Oreno, a Heddon Lucky 13 and a Smithwick Devil’s Horse.
