Jigging spoons and blade baits — hard metal, if you prefer — are among the most productive lures for crappie during the cold-water period in deep reservoirs and natural lakes. Yet these two lures, which are popular for bass and walleye in many regions, are only sporadically employed by crappie anglers. Hard metal has long been a go-to bait for a variety of fish species once water temperatures dip into the low 50s and baitfish begin their fall exodus to deep water. Hardy Northern anglers who are willing to contend with the sometimes miserable late-fall weather often appreciate the effectiveness of hard metal for crappie. However, in states where multiple-pole slow-trolling techniques dominate the crappie scene, there seems to be little interest in trying something different.
