Locating and catching bass in a massive body of water can be likened to a jigsaw puzzle with many pieces. There are times when bass will be on deep offshore structure, times they will be suspended in open water chasing roaming baitfish and, of course, times when they will be shallow. Mention bass in shallow water and anglers’ thoughts typically turn to spring and the spawning period, but bass can also be shallow in fall — extremely shallow. Springtime shallow bass are a finicky bunch. They are coming out of the coldest period of the year and are being driven by the natural instinct to reproduce. Sometimes they eat and sometimes they don’t.
