In part because of their widespread availability, bluegills are often referred to as the all-American panfish. Although these colorful fish are one of the most abundant species in a lake, quality-sized bluegill may not be as easy to find and catch as some anglers might expect during the dog days of summer.
Sure, smaller bluegills are still in shallow weeds and around docks. But like their largemouth cousins, schools of big bluegills often move to deeper water.
The outside edge of a weedbed is a starting point, but don’t stop there. Concentrations of bluegills have been uncovered as deep as 28 feet in some clear-water natural lakes. In reservoirs, they are often found around deep-water brushpiles and stumps.
