The saying goes, “The more things change, the more they stay the same.” This was never truer than when it comes to “new” techniques for fishing. Many years ago, crappie anglers were plagued only by the choice of using minnows or jigs to catch America’s favorite panfish. While minnows or jigs is still a big choice, the way to present these two baits, along with others, has gotten a little more sophisticated.
Using planer boards for other types of fish is not a new tactic but is relatively new in the arena of crappie fishing. For years, Northern anglers pursued steelhead, salmon and lake trout with planers under various trolling tactics. Saltwater anglers also have used planers to provide spread to their offshore trolling baits. Typically, these types of planers were linked to the boat via a high-test towline, and the fishing line was attached to the planer by means of a tension release. The purpose at that time was to move baits out away from the boat to prevent spooking wary fish that were reluctant to feed in the motor wake.
